Your IP Address And What You Need To Know.

What is an IP address?

Every device connected to the Internet is assigned a unique identifier known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. Your IP address consists of four number segments separated by periods (.) and look something like 66.70.0.1.

Since these numbers are usually assigned by internet service providers within different regions, an IP address can often be used to identify the region and/or country from which a computer is currently located. Your IP address may be visible to websites that you visit and can display your general region and location.

How are IP Addresses Used?

IP addresses are key for search engines to offer you local content and local services.  For instance, if you do a Google search on "Pet Products", you will most likely get some search results from businesses in your region of the world.  It also offers forums, gaming sites, and even classified services the ability to block individuals who are abusing the site (spamming, bad language, or general abuse).  And once you are banned, even if by accident, you are most likely banned for good!

My IP Address Has Been Banned From A Certain Website.  My Account Is On Hold.  What Can I Do?

If your IP address is banned from a particular website or forum, you have a few options.  Although, you were probably doing something that you should not have been doing.  Sure, sometimes it's accidental, but most of the time sites ban people for not following the rules.  MAKE SURE TO READ AND FOLLOW THE RULES FOR ALL FORUMS, AND SITES.

Option #1

You can contact the website, and apologize for breaking the rules, and convince them that you will not violate the site rules in the future.   If you were accidentally banned, this method often works.  If you were banned from a site such as Craigslist for over posting, for example, you will probably not be reinstated.  You can be on hold permanently.

Option #2

You can change your IP address, and create a new username and password.  Keep in mind, this is not a simple thing to do, and may not work with all sites.  Take our Craigslist example, you will also need to delete all of your cookies, and possibly need additional phone numbers to create a new account.  Craigslist recently went to a phone verification system as extra security.  It can be done, but it's getting tougher each month.

Websites are cracking down on abuse, and coming up with new ways to block website abusers every day.   At this point, banning IP addresses is the quickest and most effective to manage a forum or website.
